Donald L. Moffitt

Illinois State Representative 74th District

Making Our Communities a Safer Place to Live and Work
Working to make our communities a safer place to live and work, Moffitt has made public safety a top priority. Thanks to the efforts of Representative Moffitt, the 94th District (his former legislative district) was one of the first districts in the State of Illinois to equip every fire department with life-saving technology such as thermal imaging cameras. In addition, many area public safety officials were able to trade outdated equipment for the latest advanced live-saving equipment.

The American Red Cross recognized Moffitt for his commitment to the health and safety of his constituents after he obtained automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for area police departments. As co-chairman of the House Fire Protection Task Force, a bipartisan committee working to ensure that fire departments have the funding to purchase needed equipment and gear, Representative Moffitt helped to establish a No-interest Revolving Fire Truck Loan available to all Illinois Fire Prevention Districts. Hailed by several area
fire departments for his efforts, he was named Honorary Firefighter by Clover Township, Honorary Chief of Altona Fire Protection District and Honorary Paramedic by Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service. Moffitt was selected the 2002 Legislator of the Year by the Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts, and Illinois Firefighters Association named him “Legislator of the Year” in 2003 for his support of the Fire Service of Illinois.

In 2005, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board cited the work of Rep. Moffitt in support of law enforcement professionals by presenting him with the Distinguished Service Award.

Following passage of a bill requiring safe measures be in force before permitting pre-planned prairie burns, The Nature Conservancy awarded Rep. Moffitt their Acorn Award in 2007, for his leadership on significant initiatives affecting the environment.

In 2003 the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association selected Representative Moffitt and Representative Mike Smith (D-Canton) both as Legislators of the Year for their work in support of firefighters. In 2004 the Northern Illinois Alliance of Fire Protection Districts selected both Representative Don Moffitt and Representative Mike Smith as their Legislators of the Year. In 2005, the Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board named Rep. Moffitt recipient of their Distinguished Service Award.
